The electromagnetic waves generated by electronic devices may negatively affect other, similar, electronic devices. Such affects are called Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). EMI and RFI may cause malfunctions in electronic devices. Specifically, EMI and RFI cause suppression of signals generated internally in a device, external ambient interference with equipment operation, or emissions generated internally that will interfere with equipment operation. At Seleco, our unique proprietary process for selectively plating plastics provides uniform shielding across a wide range of part geometries. In fact, a majority of our clients first call us after realizing that their design will not work without EMI/RFI shielding and they are unable to provide that shielding with either a physical barrier or a spray on coating.
Seleco’s process is a water based coating applied by an immersion process. This is an environmentally responsible and water based process, there are no volatile solvents used and the plastic is not stressed. Once the base coat has been applied and dried, a shortened electroless plating process applies a uniform thickness of copper (the second most conductive metal in the world) which is then covered by a thin coating of nickel to protect the copper from oxidation. This ensures the conductivity of the part remains consistent over the life of the product. The plastic is never exposed to heat about 130°F, so no deformation of the housing. Additionally, because we use an immersion process, we are able to provide a consistent resistance of less than than 1 to 0.1 ohms from point to point. [Read more…]
